Dr. Bakshi Ram (Padma Shri Awardee)

Dr. Bakshi Ram (born July 1, 1959) is a renowned plant breeding scientist and Padma Shri awardee. He completed his B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Plant Breeding from CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, and was a Gold Medalist at both graduate and postgraduate levels.

He served as Director of the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, and the UP Council of Sugarcane Research, Shahjahanpur. Through his innovative breeding techniques, he developed 22 sugarcane varieties, including the highly successful Co 0238, which played a major role in increasing sugarcane productivity, sugar recovery, and farmers' income across India.

His contributions led to significant economic benefits for the farming community and strengthened India's sugar and ethanol industries. With more than 435 scientific publications and 48 prestigious awards to his credit, Dr. Bakshi Ram has made an outstanding contribution to agricultural research and rural development.

Even after his retirement in 2021, he continues to guide farmers and sugar mills, helping improve sugarcane productivity and profitability. In recognition of his exceptional service to Indian agriculture, he was honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 2023.
